Remembering the Ancient Mysteries of Communication with the Cosmos

As the Autumn Equinox approaches, there is an unmistakable shift in the world around us. The warmth of summer begins to soften, the evenings arrive earlier, leaves begin their transformation, and the air itself seems to carry the first whispers of the season ahead.

Known as Mabon within many modern pagan traditions, the Autumn Equinox marks a moment of balance between light and darkness. It has become associated with harvest, gratitude, completion, and preparation for the inward journey of the darker months.

Yet within the Atlantean traditions researched by author Murry Hope, this point in the sacred year brings us to another fascinating observance known as the Festival of Air.

According to Hope's writings, the Atlanteans observed four great seasonal festivals connected with the elements. The Festival of Air followed the Festival of Fire by approximately three months, and its central theme was communication with the cosmos and the divinities.

There is something about this teaching that feels beautifully aligned with autumn. As the activity of summer begins to quiet and nature slowly turns inward, perhaps we too are being invited to become quieter, more observant and more receptive to the subtle ways the Divine has been communicating with us all along.

The Pilgrimage to the High Places

Imagine Atlantis at the beginning of this changing season. Groups of people leave their homes carrying flowers, grain and objects created by their own hands as they begin a pilgrimage toward the high places. Some climb natural hills and peaks while others ascend great stepped structures built upon the plains, gradually leaving the noise and activity of everyday life below them.

Murry Hope describes the Festival of Air as being celebrated primarily in these elevated places. Where hills or mountains were unavailable, pyramid-like structures were erected so that people could still make the symbolic journey upward.

I find the imagery of this pilgrimage particularly beautiful because communication requires space to listen. There are times when we need to step away from our routines, distractions and responsibilities long enough to hear what has been trying to reach us beneath all the noise.

For the Atlanteans, climbing to the high places may have been both a physical and spiritual journey. With each step upward, they moved closer to the open sky while simultaneously shifting their awareness toward the cosmos and the Divine.

Perhaps this is part of the invitation of the Festival of Air for us today. Before asking for another sign, another message or another piece of guidance, we might first ask whether we have created enough space to receive it.

Ta-Khu, Divine Ancestor of Sirius

The central figure associated with the Festival of Air was Ta-Khu, pronounced Tar-Koo. Murry Hope describes Ta-Khu as one of two Divine Ancestors whom the Atlanteans believed had descended to Earth from the Sirius system and identifies him as the Lord of Time and Space.

His sacred stone and colour were both amethyst, while his attributes included the caduceus and the dolphin. Hope also draws correspondences between Ta-Khu and the later figures of Thoth or Tehuti and Hermes.

There is so much contained within this symbolism. Thoth and Hermes are both associated with wisdom, sacred knowledge, writing and communication between worlds, while the caduceus evokes the movement of energy between opposing forces. Even the dolphin feels significant when we consider communication, intelligence and the ability to move between worlds that are very different from our own.

Yet perhaps the most fascinating aspect of Ta-Khu is his association with Time and Space. The Festival of Air was not simply about communication between one person and another; it opened the possibility of communication beyond the limitations of the physical world and into a much greater cosmic field.

For those of us who work with intuition, meditation, dreams, the Akashic Records or the Star Nations, this concept may feel surprisingly familiar. We may use different language today, but the desire to understand our relationship with something greater than ourselves has followed humanity throughout history.

The amethyst correspondence gives us another beautiful way to contemplate Ta-Khu. Amethyst has long been associated with spiritual awareness, intuition and higher consciousness, making it a wonderful stone to work with as we move into this season of listening.

The Sacred Offering

One of my favourite details about the Festival of Air is the tradition of bringing an offering to the high places. Hope writes that these gifts were rarely valuable in a material sense and often consisted of flowers, grain, handmade objects and other simple offerings.

After being presented, they were blessed by the priests and kept within the temples until they could later be distributed to those who needed them.

There is a beautiful lesson contained here because the people did not climb the mountain empty-handed, expecting the Divine simply to give them something. They arrived prepared to participate in the exchange.

Communication with the sacred was reciprocal.

This changes the question from What can I receive? to What am I willing to bring?

Perhaps your offering is gratitude for everything that has unfolded this year. Maybe it is an act of service, something created with your own hands, a promise you are ready to honour or simply your willingness to show up more fully for your spiritual path.

There is also something deeply meaningful about the offerings eventually making their way to those who needed them. The blessing received at the temple did not remain within the temple. It returned to the community, reminding us that spiritual wisdom becomes most powerful when it eventually finds expression through how we live, serve and care for one another.

Sacred Sound and Communication

Elsewhere in her description of the Atlantean solar religion, Murry Hope tells us that music, movement and ritual formed an important part of daily temple life. She describes three principal solar rites known as the Dance of the Rising Sun, the Hymn to the High Sun and the Prayer to the Setting Sun, which were performed through ritual song and dance by priests and priestesses.

Although Hope does not identify these specifically as Festival of Air ceremonies, they offer another glimpse into how communication with the sacred may have been understood within Atlantean spiritual culture.

Prayer did not necessarily require silence. Communication could happen through the voice, music, movement and the body itself.

I think sometimes we become so focused on receiving messages through meditation or intuitive sight that we forget how many languages the soul can speak. A song can open something within us that words cannot reach. Movement can shift energy that the mind has been unable to understand. A prayer spoken aloud can carry a very different resonance than one held quietly within our thoughts.

Communication with the Divine has never belonged to only one language.

Perhaps this Festival of Air is an invitation to notice which language Spirit uses most naturally with you.

A Modern Atlantean Festival of Air Ritual

If you feel called to honour this sacred season, consider creating your own Festival of Air ceremony. You may wish to perform it outdoors beneath the open sky or, if possible, somewhere elevated where you can physically experience the symbolism of stepping away from everyday life and entering a wider perspective.

You may wish to gather:

  • An amethyst crystal
  • Incense or another representation of Air
  • Flowers, grain or a small handmade offering
  • A journal
  • Music that helps you enter a contemplative state

Begin by taking several slow breaths and becoming aware of the air moving in and out of your body. Imagine yourself ascending toward one of the sacred high places of Atlantis, carrying your offering with you. With every step, allow the activity of the world below to become quieter until you arrive beneath an immense open sky.

Place your offering before you and take a moment to express gratitude for the guidance, lessons and experiences that have brought you to this point in your journey.

Then become still. Rather than immediately asking for an answer, allow yourself to listen.

You might eventually ask: What has Spirit been trying to communicate to me? Where am I being asked to listen more deeply? What wisdom is ready to come through? How can I carry that wisdom back into the world around me?

Spend time journaling whatever arises, remembering that communication does not always arrive as words. You may receive an image, memory, sensation, emotion, sudden realization or simply a feeling of peace. Allow the experience to unfold in whatever language feels natural to you.

The Divine Has Always Been Speaking

We live in a world filled with more communication than perhaps any generation before us has ever experienced. Messages arrive constantly through our phones, emails, social media, news, conversations and endless streams of information, yet amid all of this communication it can sometimes become surprisingly difficult to hear the quieter voice within.

The Festival of Air reminds us that sacred communication requires our participation. The Atlanteans climbed to the high places, brought their offerings and created space to commune with something greater than themselves. Perhaps we are being asked to make our own version of that pilgrimage today.

We do not necessarily need to climb a mountain or stand upon the steps of an ancient temple. Sometimes the pilgrimage is simply the decision to become quiet enough to notice what has been surrounding us all along.

The Divine may speak through our intuition, our dreams, the natural world, synchronicities, prayer, music, meditation and those inexplicable moments when something lands within us with such clarity that we simply know. Our role is to cultivate enough presence to hear it.

As the Autumn Equinox arrives and the world around us begins its gradual journey inward, may the winds carry away the noise that has made it difficult to hear your own wisdom. May Ta-Khu remind you of your connection to the cosmos and the mysteries that exist beyond ordinary time and space. May the amethyst ray open your awareness to the guidance surrounding you, and may you remember that communication with the Divine has never been reserved for the temples of the ancient world.

The sacred conversation continues.
