Griffins: Ancient Guardians of the Threshold, Sacred Knowledge & Atlantis

Half lion and Half eagle... Guardian of gold, temples, sacred knowledge and the thresholds between worlds.

The Griffin is one of the most fascinating hybrid beings preserved within ancient mythology. Images of Griffin-like creatures can be traced across civilizations and thousands of years, appearing in the ancient Near East, Anatolia, the Aegean world, Greece and beyond.

They were powerful. They were protective. And again and again, they appeared wherever something precious needed to be guarded.

But what exactly were the Griffins guarding?

And could the myths surrounding these extraordinary creatures preserve a much older memory?

The Ancient Origins of the Griffin

Most people associate Griffins with Greek mythology, but their story begins much earlier.

Composite creatures combining characteristics of lions and birds of prey appeared throughout the ancient Near East and eastern Mediterranean. By the Bronze Age, Griffin imagery had become particularly important throughout the Aegean world, and later the Griffin became firmly embedded within Greek mythology and art.

The familiar Griffin generally possesses the powerful body of a lion combined with the head, beak and wings of an eagle or other bird of prey. Symbolically, this combination is extraordinary. The lion belongs to the Earth. It embodies strength, courage, rulership, sovereignty and physical power. The eagle belongs to the sky. It sees from above. It represents higher vision, freedom, divine authority and the ability to perceive what cannot be seen from the ground. Bring the two together and we have a creature capable of symbolically occupying two realms at once.

Earth and Heaven.
Body and Spirit.
Strength and Vision.
Sovereignty and Higher Consciousness.

The Griffin is therefore a creature of the in-between and this becomes incredibly important when we begin to understand its role as a guardian.

Griffins and Sacred Power

One of the most beautiful surviving examples of Griffin imagery can be found in the famous Throne Room at Knossos on Crete where Griffins flank the throne.

Consider the symbolism of that placement... At the centre is a seat of authority. On either side stand powerful hybrid beings associated with protection and sacred power. They are not randomly decorating the room, the ancients wouldn't do that. They are guarding something powerful.

This relationship between Griffins, authority and guardianship continued across cultures. Griffin imagery appeared in connection with important architecture, sacred objects, tombs and places of power. This gives us another aspect of Griffin consciousness to explore: Sovereignty. The Griffin protects what has become sacred.

The Griffins Who Guarded Gold

Within Greek tradition, Griffins became famously associated with gold.

The ancient Greek historian Herodotus wrote of the legendary one-eyed Arimaspians of the distant north and their conflicts with Griffins who guarded deposits of gold. The battle between humans seeking treasure and Griffins protecting it became a recurring theme within ancient art.

On the surface, it is a fantastic story. But mythology becomes much more interesting when we ask what the treasure represents. Gold has always represented more than material wealth. It can symbolize illumination, divine consciousness, incorruptibility, wisdom and spiritual attainment. What if the treasure guarded by the Griffin is knowledge or power? What if it is remembrance or maybe initiation?

And what if the Guardian is not preventing us from receiving the treasure, but determining whether we have become capable of carrying it?

Guardians of the Threshold

This is where the Griffin becomes particularly fascinating within Mystery School teachings.

Griffin imagery has historically appeared around entrances, architecture and sacred spaces. Like other guardian beings found throughout the ancient world such as: sphinxes, winged lions, temple lions and other composite creatures; Griffins stand at boundaries.

A doorway seems simple until we consider what a doorway actually represents. It is the place where one space ends and another begins and the moment we cross it, we are somewhere else.

Within spiritual initiation, the threshold carries the same symbolism. There are points upon our path where we simply cannot continue as the person we once were or perhaps have always been. The next chamber requires another level of consciousness, responsibility, integrity or devotion. Thus enters the Guardian.

The Guardian asks:

  • Are you ready?
  • Can you hold what will be revealed?
  • Have you integrated what you have already received?
  • Will you use the knowledge responsibly?
  • Are you prepared to embody what exists on the other side of this gate?

From this perspective, the Guardian is not an adversary. The Guardian protects the sacred from those who are unprepared to carry it while simultaneously protecting the initiate from entering a level of knowledge or power they are not yet prepared to hold.

This changes our relationship with the threshold completely.

What If the Griffin Does Not Block the Path?

We are accustomed to interpreting obstacles as signs that something has gone wrong, but initiation offers another possibility. The very resistance we encounter could mean we have arrived at the gate. The question then becomes less about how we can tear down the door and more about what the doorway is asking us to become.

Courageous? Full of integrity and/or discipline? Trustworthy, sovereign and devoted?

The Griffin standing before the gate may therefore be asking one of the most important questions of the spiritual path: What must you embody before you can cross the next threshold? The answer will be different for every initiate.

Atlantis and the Mystery of Hybrid Beings

There is another layer to the Griffin story that brings us into the mysteries of Atlantis.

At this point, it is important to distinguish mythology and archaeology from esoteric teachings.  What follows belongs to Atlantology, clairvoyant accounts and esoteric traditions surrounding Atlantis.

According to some of these traditions, Atlantean civilization became highly advanced in its understanding and manipulation of the natural world.

One of the more controversial themes within certain Atlantean accounts is experimentation involving human and animal forms.

Through this lens, some of the hybrid creatures remembered within mythology such as: the Centaur, Minotaur and other human-animal or multi-animal beings have been interpreted as distant memories of Atlantean experimentation.

Not all such experimentation is described as benevolent. Some esoteric accounts of the later periods of Atlantis describe knowledge being used without sufficient wisdom, compassion or regard for the highest outcome of humanity and the animal kingdom.

Yet that raises another intriguing possibility.

Could some experiments have resulted in extraordinary beings? And could the Griffin have been one of them?

Could Griffins Carry a Memory of Atlantis?

We cannot answer this through conventional history but we can ask the question.

  • Why have hybrid beings remained so deeply embedded within human mythology?
  • Why do similar guardian archetypes appear across civilizations separated by geography and time?
  • Were these creatures purely symbolic?
  • Were they expressions of humanity's imagination?
  • Were they spiritual or multidimensional beings perceived through altered states of consciousness?
  • Could some myths preserve distorted memories of something ancient?

Or could several of these possibilities exist simultaneously?

Sometimes the question itself becomes a doorway and the topic of the Griffin invites us to stand at that very doorway.

Griffins and Dragons

There is another fascinating parallel between Griffins and Dragons.

Both are extraordinary creatures frequently associated with power. Both can fly, are guardians of treasure and have been associated with sacred knowledge. Both can also appear terrifying to someone approaching what they protect and both occupy the boundary between the familiar world and the mysterious one.

Yet their consciousness feels distinctly different.

Dragon teachings often carry themes of elemental power, transformation, ancient Earth wisdom, creation and tremendous primordial force.

The Griffin carries something different...Guardianship. Discernment. Sovereignty. The Gate.

The Griffin stands before something and its presence tells us that what lies beyond is important.

Meeting the Griffin

In our recent Galactic Temples of Light journey, we explored this mystery experientially. Rather than deciding beforehand what Griffins are, we entered the journey with questions.

What does the Griffin look like when it appears to you? Who is it? Where does it come from? Have you known this being before? What is it guarding? And most importantly: What threshold are you currently standing before?

From there, the Griffin becomes personal... A new expression of your spiritual gifts. The threshold to ancient knowledge. The stand you take for greater responsibility and sovereignty. Or perhaps an aspect of yourself that has remained protected until you became ready to reclaim it.

Imagine approaching the gate and discovering that you cannot simply walk through. The Griffin looks at you with keen discernment. It asks: What have you already mastered that brought you here? Then: What must you embody to enter? Only then does the gate begin to open.

The Treasure Beyond the Gate

Beyond every initiatory threshold is something we were not previously capable of accessing. The treasure may not resemble gold. It could appear as a book, key, crystal, crown, flame, symbol, piece of ancient technology or forgotten memory. It may simply be a feeling or knowing. A part of yourself returning.

The form matters less than the recognition that this has been protected until now. That is one of the greatest teachings the Griffin offers us.

Sometimes guardianship is an act of profound love. There are teachings we understand differently after experience and responsibilities we can carry only after developing the wisdom gained. There are levels of spiritual power that require corresponding levels of integrity. And there are also doors that open because we have become the person capable of walking through them.

When the Guardian Appears

If you feel yourself standing at a threshold in your own life, consider approaching it differently. Instead of immediately asking how to remove what stands between you and the next chapter, ask: What is this threshold asking me to embody? What have I already mastered? What am I being prepared to carry? What treasure might require this level of preparation?

And what if the presence of the Guardian is itself significant? Remember, the Griffin stands at the gate. Its appearance may mean you have already travelled farther than you realize.

And now, the next initiation begins.
